Washington Donald Trump is the 11th president of the US to lose an election in an attempt to get re-elected. Before them, 10 presidents have lost in trying to get re-elected. Gerald Ford, who became president after Richard Nixon’s resignation, also suffered a failure in the 1976 election. George HW Bush was the last president to face defeat in a re-election effort.
He had to face defeat in the 1992 election. President Grover Cleveland lost the election in 1888. But four years later, he returned to power defeating the then President Benjamin Harrison. He is the only President of the US who does not have two consecutive terms. This list does not include those presidents who refused to be party candidates for the next election.
