Dehradun. Devpush Brahmakamal, which rises from 12 thousand feet to 15 thousand feet above the sea level, is scattered sixth in the high Himalayan region of Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts. This rare species of flowers usually starts blooming in late June and is seen by September. Dr. Ambarish Kumar, senior scientist of Botanical Survey of India, Dehradun, says that Brahmakamal can be seen in some places even in October. But, this year it is seen in abundance in Kedarnath Wildlife Division and Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. The reason for this is the lack of tourist movement in high Himalayan areas in lockdown. It has the status of the state flower of Uttarakhand.
Brahmakamal is considered a symbol of purity and auspiciousness. Brahmakamal simply means ‘the lotus of Brahma’. This flower is also very dear to Lord Shiva. In Sawan, devotees offer Lord Shiva’s anointing from Brahmakamal. This flower is also used for worship in Kedarnath and Badrinath Dham. The scientific name of Brahmakamal is Sauseria obovelata. This white colored flower blooms only once a year on 15 to 50 cm tall plants, that too after sunset. After midnight this flower is in its full puberty. It is a very beautiful and glowing star-shaped intoxicating floral fragrance.
It is believed that if someone gets an eye on it while blooming at night, then it is very auspicious for him. Brahmakamal is a self-growing flower and it also grows naturally. However, work is being done for its conservation in Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, Kedarnath Wildlife Division and Badrinath Forest Division. The forest department is transplanting it through such places where it is not spread yet. Apart from this, there are plans to grow it from seed as well. Amit Kanwar, divisional forest officer of Kedarnath Wildlife Division, says a plan has been made to construct a garden of Brahmakamal around the meditation cave on the hill of Kedarpuri. So that travelers can be delighted with its visions.
Shree Vishnu offered 1000 Brahmakamal to Bholenath
It is believed that when Lord Vishnu came to the Himalayan region, he offered one thousand Brahmakamal to Lord Bholenath. But, for some reason one flower fell short. Then Lord Vishnu gave one of his eyes in the form of a flower, Brahmakamal to Bholenath.
Since then, Bholenath got a name ‘Kamleshwar’ and Vishnu’s ‘Kamal Nayan’. According to Buryan Chandra Uniyal, the bishop of Badrinath, according to another narrative, Hemaksali, the servant of Kubera, the treasurer of Yaksharaj and Lord Narayana, went to Kailas to take this flower for worship. But, due to delay, he could not invoke it to Shiva. Then Kubera cursed Hemmali and expelled him from Alkapuri.
