Lucknow . Police on Wednesday detained Congress leader Alok Prasad on charges of inciting a woman to commit self-immolation. Significantly, the woman tried to set herself on fire in front of the assembly on Tuesday. The woman is admitted to a civil hospital, where her condition is stated to be critical.
Alok Prasad is the son of former Governor Sukhdev Prasad.
He was detained for abetting a woman from Maharajganj district to be set ablaze.
Police sources claim that Alok’s location was near the place where the woman tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire.
The woman (35) had told the police that she had married a Muslim youth after divorcing her first husband.
Her second husband lives in Saudi Arabia and the woman’s in-laws harass her.
Interestingly, in July this year, another Congress leader Anup Patel was arrested on charges of inciting two women from Amethi to set themselves on fire in front of the assembly.
One woman was killed due to burns.
Police commissioner Sujit Pandey then told reporters that “a case has been registered against those arrested, including AIMIM leader, for abetment of conspiracy self-immolation”.
He said that the women met Anoop Patel at the UP Congress Committee office on 4 July, who had given them the same advice and asked journalists to cover it.
