Chennai | The Chess Players Forum appealed to the central government to honor the Indian chess team which recently won the gold medal at the Olympiad. On Saturday, the Forum wrote a letter to the Union Sports Minister Kiran Rijiju, saying that the achievements of chess players are being constantly ignored. He has written that the players of the Indian chess team should be respected.
“India topped the online chess Olympiad which is one of the greatest achievements yet in the history of the game. It should be awarded for the hard work and dedication of the players,” the letter reads.
The Forum wrote, “The Indian men’s team won a bronze medal in the tournament in 2014 and the current achievement is much bigger than that.”
“On this occasion, we would like to draw your attention to the neglect of the success of chess players for years. Even at the recent National Sports Awards, chess was ignored.”
The forum said that intellectual games like chess are India’s biggest legacy.
