New Delhi / Chennai The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has accused an Islamic preacher Zakir Naik and two radical preachers of Pakistan origin in an FIR related to a high-profile ‘love jihad’ case. The high-profile case involves the daughter of a Chennai businessman and the son of a top Bangladesh politician, who belongs to Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The NIA is investigating the case of the marriage of the Indian businessman’s daughter and the Bangladesh politician’s son in London.
According to the information, Zakir Naik, wanted by Indian enforcement agencies, and staunch campaigners of US-based Pakistani origin have been named as accused in the case.
The girl’s father initially filed a complaint with the Chennai Central Crime Branch in May. She alleged that her daughter, who was studying in London, came into contact with the fundamentalist and was forced to convert to Islam.
He also alleged that his daughter was abducted from London and taken to Bangladesh by some Bangladeshis.
Chennai police commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal told IANS, “The case was related to the investigation abroad, so it was referred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).” He said that it is not possible to share more information in the case at the moment.
Those named in the NIA’s FIR are Zakir Naik as well as Yasir Qadi and Nauman Ali Khan, both of whom are Islamic preachers in the US.
Kadi had put up a video of Naik making a sensational claim.
At the same time, the main accused in the case is Nafees, son of BNP leader and former MP Shakhawat Hussain Bakul. Bakul was elected to Parliament from Narsingdi-4 as a BNP candidate in 1991 and 2001.
Bakul was arrested in December 2013 from Khaleda Zia’s residence and was tried for extortion by a businessman in June 2017.
As per the allegations being levied by the NIA, the Central Government had obtained information from the Tamil Nadu government on May 28, 2020 regarding filing of a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. This was a case related to the complaint lodged against Nafees, who is a Bangladeshi citizen and was allegedly involved in the kidnapping and smuggling of an Indian citizen.
