Gorakhpur Japanese encephalitis (JE) in eastern Uttar Pradesh killed hundreds of people for many years. According to the Chief Minister, now the disease is on the verge of being eradicated completely. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that encephalitis, which has been wreaking havoc for the last 40 years, will be completely eradicated in the next two years.
During his recent visit to Gorakhpur, the Chief Minister told journalists that the death rate of encephalitis in the eastern part of the state had fallen by 95 percent since 2016. “The fight against encephalitis is now in its final stages. In two years it will be eradicated from the region. We will fight a similar battle against Kovid-19,” he said.
He presented data for the last four years of encephalitis in Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Maharajganj and Deoria, which saw a steep decline in the number of cases and mortality. Significantly, in August 2017, 60 children died in three days at the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur. The reason behind this was reportedly due to a disruption in the supply of oxygen and there was a big controversy about it. Since then, Yogi launched a cleanliness and awareness campaign in the region, which has led to a drastic reduction in the number of encephalitis cases.
