Dubai . The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced the operation of its first nuclear power plant in the capital Abu Dhabi. According to the report, on Saturday, UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the achievement in a tweet.
He wrote, “We declare the success of the UAE in operating the first peaceful nuclear power reactor in the Arab world. The teams engaged in this work have succeeded in loading the nuclear fuel package and successfully completing the test.”
He said that with a view to the future we aim to secure one-fourth of the electricity consumed in the state through safe, reliable and emission-free ways.
The Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, also tweeted, “We are proud to begin the operation of the Baraka nuclear power plant in line with the largest international safety standards.”
“The plant is the culmination of more than a decade of vision, strategic planning and robust program management,” said Mohammed Al Hammadi, CEO of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation.
The project, located 280 km from Abu Dhabi, is expected to cover 25 percent of the country’s energy needs.
