According to ancient texts, Ayodhya was founded around 2200 BC. According to the epic Ramayana, Rama was born in Ayodhya, King Dasharatha of the Ikshvaku dynasty was his father who was the 63rd ruler. Whenever the pilgrimages of ancient India are mentioned, the name of Ayodhya definitely comes. ‘Ayodhya Mathura Maya Kashi Kanchi Hywantika, Puri Dwaravati Chaiv Saptaita Mokshadayika.’ According to Buddhist beliefs, Buddha had resided in Ayodhya or Saket for 16 years. Ayodhya remained the main center of the Ramanandi sect.

Shujauddaula, the successor of Saadat Khan, made Faizabad the capital of Awadh.

Nawab Safdarjung made it his military headquarters in 1739–54. Shuja-ud-daulah, who came after this, built the fort in Faizabad. Faizabad was known throughout India during this period. It was only 130 km from Lucknow and it used to fall on the way from Bengal. Faizabad was also called Chhota Kolkata.
At the height of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula
The reign of Shuja-ud-Daula can be called the golden period for Faizabad. The prosperity that Faizabad achieved during that period could not be done again. During that period, many buildings were built here, whose markings are still present today. Shuja-ud-daula’s wife Bahu Begum lived in Moti Mahal. The view of the entire Faizabad was visible from here. In 1775, Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula changed his capital from Faizabad to Lucknow, after which it began to lose its tone.
