Kathmandu The wealth of Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has increased drastically during the last few years. Their accounts have also been detected abroad. The Chinese Ambassador is his great help in this corruption. This is not a new move in China. He has been using corrupt politicians to enter countries with weak economies like Nepal. This has been said in the latest report of Global Watch Analysis.
Olly and his wife accused of having an account with Mirabod Bank in Geneva
According to the report’s author Roland Jaccard, China has two objectives behind it. First, to advance the business interests of Chinese companies in that country. Second, to influence the policies of that country so that China’s long-term influence is sustained.
Reportedly, Ollie also has an account with Mirabod Bank in Geneva. Oli has invested $ 5.5 million (about Rs 48 crore) as long term deposits and shares in this bank. This gives Oli and his wife Radhika Shakya a profit of around Rs 3.5 crore annually. However, the bank has said that there is no account in the name of Oli. The report also mentions several examples of Ollie’s corrupt exploits with the help of China.
Chinese projects approved bypassing rules
In his first term as Prime Minister of Nepal in 2015-16, Oli invested in the telecommunications sector of Cambodia with the help of the then Chinese Ambassador Wu Chuntai. The deal was made by Nepalese business organ Sharing Sherpa, close to Oli. It was also assisted by Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hu Sen and Chinese diplomat Bo Jiangao. Oli is surrounded by similar allegations of corruption even in his second term. He bypassed the rules and approved Chinese projects.
In December 2018, the contract for the construction of a ‘digital action room’ was awarded to Chinese company Huawei without any tender. Whereas, the government company Nepal Tele Communication could do this work well. When there was a stir and it was investigated, it was revealed that Oli’s political advisor Vishnu Rimal’s son had played a key role in getting the deal done so that he could get financial benefits.
Students agitated over allegations of corruption
Another example is of May 2019, when the rules were disregarded and arbitrary Chinese companies were given crores of contracts. Due to these acts of Oli, students took to the streets in June last. They were enraged at the ways the Corona virus was handled. The students alleged that the PPE kits, test kits etc. purchased from China are not only cheap but also expensive. In this case, bribery is under investigation against many close advisors of Oli besides the Health Minister of Nepal. Such allegations of corruption are creating a serious situation for Oli and his Chinese colleagues in Nepal.
