new Delhi. High-tax items such as gold, cigarettes and alcohol topped the list of smuggled goods in India amid the current Corona crisis.
Amidst the epidemic, not only did a tremendous increase in the smuggling of these goods but smugglers, interestingly, smuggled cigarettes illegally through Kovid-19 special trains.
Disclosing this fact, based on a study of the seizure of such smuggled goods, FICCI’s Committee Cascade (Committee Against Smuggling and Counterfeiting Activities Destroying the Economy) said that customs officials took less than a week. Two major seizures related to cigarette smuggling occurred at New Delhi railway station, where smugglers were using Kovid-19 special trains to illegally smuggle cigarette consignments.
The study said that the seizure or seizure came from two other major groups of the foreign cigarette smuggling racket, the first being in Mumbai and the second in Hyderabad. It said the total value of the recovered cigarettes is more than Rs 15 crore.
The study said that at the Kerala Airport Authority and Thiruvananthapuram Airport earlier this month, customs seized gold worth Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 15 crore, respectively.
The study estimates that over 16 lakh jobs in five industry sectors alone went up in 2017-18 due to smuggling. It said, “In addition to unemployment and large-scale financial losses, it also brings crime and terrorism funding tax instability.”
To create mass awareness of this threat, FICCI Cascade has been communicating with the government and enforcement agencies in several states of India on ways to mitigate this challenge.
The organization has also appealed to policy makers to consider illegal trade as a national threat.
FICCI has commended the enforcement agencies for the recent seizures and urged the government to maintain vigilance over the smuggling of goods.
The organization said, “Illegal trade has emerged as one of the most dangerous challenges facing our country, especially during the current pandemic that has led to the economic crisis. It has led to many smuggling of goods such as gold, cigarettes, The case comes in the wake of the Kovid-19 epidemic that has been recorded. ”
FICCI Cascade President Anil Rajput congratulated the officials of the enforcement agencies for the successful recovery and said, “The perpetrators of trafficking are always looking for a different way to cheat the system in order to carry out their activities.”
He said that this gives a big push to the economic interests of the nation and society pays a heavy price. Recent efforts by enforcement officers are laudable.
