London. On this day i.e. on June 25, 1983, under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, the Indian cricket team surprised everyone by raising the trophy for the world winner for the first time.
No one expected India from this World Cup played in England. No one considered him a strong contender for the title.
The Indian team also lacked experience as they had played only 40 ODIs before. His performance in the last World Cups was also not good.
The team had nothing to lose and this probably became the strength of Kapil’s team. At the start of the tournament, he defeated the then world champions Windies by 34 runs. The match was played on 9 June at Old Trafford.
The confidence that came in Kapil’s team from here brought step by step to the team. After this match, India defeated Zimbabwe.
After this, however, India lost at the hands of Australia and then the West Indies avenged their defeat in the second match.
It seemed that India would be eliminated from the World Cup. India came back strongly and defeated Zimbabwe on 18 June. Kapil scored 175 runs in this match, which was recorded in history. Even today, no one can forget this innings. On 20 June, India defeated Australia and advanced to the semi-finals.
India beat England in the semi-finals on 22 June, surpassing everyone’s expectations and made it to the final of the World Cup for the first time.
On 25 June, when the Indian team captained by Kapil faced Clive Lloyd’s team, no one thought that India would put a break on the hat-trick of the Windies.
India scored just 183 runs, but were successful in defending the target and Kapil lifted the world winner’s trophy in the balcony of the Loders ground.
India, however, had to wait 28 years to become world champions again. In 2011, under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India achieved the title of world winner for the second time in 2011.
Before this, although India became the first World Twenty20 winner under Dhoni’s captaincy, the World Cup drought ended in 2011 in ODIs.
