Patna. Another dispute has arisen between the two countries during the Nepal-India tensions over the border dispute of Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura and other issues. Nepal has put its claim on the five hundred meter plot there, prohibiting the repair of a dam located in Champaran region of Bihar. The dam is already on the Red Bakaya River coming from Nepal. This incident has created a new tension in Nepal and India.
Nepal stopped the dam on Bihar border
Nepal has halted the dam repair on the Red Bakaya River near the Balu Guabari Panchayat in Dhaka subdivision of East Champaran in Bihar. Nepal says that this dam is being built on its land. Bihar’s irrigation department has stopped work in Indian territory after Nepal’s opposition. The East Champaran district administration has informed the incident to the Union Home Ministry and the state government, including the Consulate General of India in Nepal.
Dam was broken due to severe flood in 2017
Engineer of the irrigation department, Baban Singh, who is repairing the dam, said that the western dam of the Lalbakeya river was broken by the floods in 2017. Nepal objected to its repair, after which work was halted. If a dam is built, it will be possible to prevent floods in Dhaka and Patahi in East Champaran district.
India-Nepal dispute over 500 meter plot
According to the Armed Forces of India (SSB) and the East Champaran District Administration, the dispute is over a five hundred meter plot between Pilar Nos. 345/5 and 345/7 on the Indo-Nepal border. Whenever Nepal objected to the dam, the officials of India and Nepal settled the matter by negotiation. But this time this could not be possible due to increased tension between the two countries. The people of the border region believe that the Nepali armed border guards and the Nepalese citizens across the border are embroiling the dam dispute. The villagers of Nepal also misbehaved with SSB.
There is a possibility of big foreign power being involved in the dispute
Meanwhile, people in the border area are scared due to the ban on the repair of the dam. Former sarpanch of sandstone Guabari. Zulfikar Alam believes that India has had a centuries-old socio-cultural relationship with Nepal. The borders of both countries have also remained open. In such a situation, there is a big foreign power behind the tension in the relationship and now the restriction on the repair of the dam.
Cartographic controversy boosted nationalism in Nepal
The question arises that what is the dispute between India and Nepal? During the British rule, in 1816, there was a treaty between India and Nepal at Sugauli in East Champaran, Bihar, which is called the Treaty of Sugodhi. This treaty sets the boundaries of both countries. According to the treaty, the British rulers set the origin of the Kali River as the boundary of India and Nepal, about which the two countries have different opinions. Nepal is claiming the Indian territory Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura over the origin of the river. This cartographic dispute between the two countries has increased the militant nationalism in Nepal.
The recent tension also affected the border of Bihar
The effect of tensions between the two countries due to Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura is also evident on the Bihar-Nepal border. Recently, some villagers of Sitamarhi in Bihar were taken hostage by the Nepal Police and beaten and shot at. An Indian was killed in the incident. There have also been reports of the last world of dead people from Corona in Nepal on No Mens Land adjacent to East Champaran. Now Napal has also stopped the repair of the dam.
Nepal is important for India, China is increasing influence
Despite all the disputes, Nepal, the buffer and landlock country between China and India, is very important for India. India has also contributed significantly to the development of Nepal. But in recent times China has gradually increased its influence in Nepal. China considers Nepal an important ally in its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and is investing extensively there as part of its plan to increase global trade. It is believed that Nepal is also embroiling the border dispute these days due to increasing tension between China and India under the influence of China.
