On one hand, the cricket world is busy in the excitement of the India vs Australia Test. On the other hand, Zimbabwe has created history in Test cricket. The first Test between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan started on 26th December, in which Zimbabwe’s team, batting first, has made its highest score in the history of Test cricket. Zimbabwe has scored 586 runs in the first innings thanks to the centuries of Sean Williams, Craig Irvine and Brian Bennett.
On the second day, Zimbabwe started its innings with a score of 386. Sean Williams had already scored a century on the first day. He scored 154 runs in an innings adorned with 10 fours and 3 sixes, which is also the highest score of his career in Test matches. On the other hand, on the second day of the match, Craig Irvine spread his magic and scored a lot of runs especially against spin bowling. Irvine’s innings ended at a score of 104 runs.
Zimbabwe created history
Before the match against Afghanistan, Zimbabwe’s highest score in a single innings of a Test match was 563 runs, which it made against West Indies in 2001. Now, 23 years later, Zimbabwe has improved its own record by scoring 586 runs in the first innings.
After Williams and Irvine, Brian Bennett took over the command, who came to bat at the seventh position. Let us tell you that Bennett was playing only the second Test match of his career, but as soon as he came, he started scoring runs rapidly. Due to his unbeaten innings of 110 runs, Zimbabwe was successful in crossing the 550-run mark. Bennett’s century was also in the news. A catch was declared a six when it was found in the replay that the fielder’s foot was touching the boundary line. By the end of the second day’s play, Afghanistan had scored 95 runs at the loss of 2 wickets.
