The racial comment on Jasprit Bumrah has created a stir in the cricket world. Bumrah is currently one of the best bowlers in the world and he has achieved a 5-wicket haul in the third Test match between India and Australia. This is the twelfth time in Test cricket that he has taken 5 or more wickets in an innings of a Test match. Now a famous female commentator has used the word ‘primate’ for Bumrah, which means ‘Narvanar’ in Hindi. Due to this comment made in the context of apes, the years old ‘Monkey Gate Scandal’ has again come into discussions.
Bumrah had taken 2 wickets in the first session of the second day of the Brisbane Test, when Australian legend Brett Lee praised him fiercely. Then English commentator Isa Guha said something, which has now become a matter of great controversy. He said, “Bumrah is the MVP of the team. Most Valuable Primate Jasprit Bumrah. He has been the most effective for India. Why is there so much focus on him for this test match.”
Now Isa Guha apologized
English commentator Isa Guha has now apologized for his ‘primate’ comment. He says that his purpose was only to honor Jasprit Bumrah. Apologizing, he said, “Yesterday during commentary, I used a word which can have thousands of meanings. Whoever has been hurt by my comment, I want to apologize to everyone. I respect others a lot.”
The meaning of the word ‘primate’ is seen as a big-brained ape. But it became the reason for controversy because as soon as the mention of ‘monkey’ came up, memories of the ‘Monkeygate Scandal’ that happened in the year 2008 have been refreshed. Actually, in 2008, a match was being played between India and Australia in Sydney. At that time, India’s legendary spin bowler Harbhajan Singh was accused of addressing Andrew Symonds as ‘monkey’.
Harbhajan Singh was suspended for three matches at that time for violating the rules. Well, talking about the Brisbane Test being played in 2024, people have started trolling Isa Guha on social media as soon as she called him ‘primate’. Some people did not believe Isa that she could say such a thing and some people even claimed that her career would end for such a comment.
