There was a ruckus in Kanpur (kanpur riots) after Friday prayers over a statement made on Mohammad Saheb of BJP leader Nupur Sharma. After stone-pelting, the police reached the spot, lathi-charged and fired several rounds of air. Heavy police force is deployed on the spot, but stone pelting is still happening from the narrow streets. Wherever the police goes, the stone pelting stops but as soon as it is removed, the stone pelting starts again. The special thing is that today Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath are on a tour of Kanpur countryside.
In the areas with Muslim majority population, a call was given to keep the market closed today in protest against the statement of Nupur Sharma. Meanwhile, Friday prayers were offered amidst police protection. After this, both the sides came face to face to stop the market near Sadbhavna Chowki located at Yatimkhana and stone pelting started. The police dispersed the crowd by lathi-charge. After that the situation became tense. People entered the narrow streets and started pelting stones.
The Johar Fans Association and other Muslim organizations on Friday appealed to the Muslim community to keep the business closed. Its wide impact was seen. Since morning, partial or complete closure was seen in Chamanganj, Beganganj, Talaq Mahal, Colonelganj, Hiraman Purwa, Dalel Purwa, Meston Road, Babu Purwa, Rawatpur and Jajmau.
During the Friday prayers in most mosques, it was said that they will not tolerate any inappropriate remarks made on Mohammad Saheb. The police did not allow people to protest after prayers in any area, but people came out on the streets. Only after that the ruckus started.
