Captain Dasun Shanaka’s (102) century went in vain as Sri Lanka suffered a 22-run loss to Zimbabwe in the second match of the three-match series at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. For Zimbabwe, Craig Ervine scored 91 runs in 98 balls. On the other hand, Tendai Chatra and Blessing Mujarbani took three wickets each to level the series at 1-1 after recovering from the defeat in the first match of the series.
Batting first, Zimbabwe scored 307 for seven in 50 overs with the help of half-centuries from Erwin’s 91 and Sikandar Raza (56). In reply, Sri Lanka’s team could manage only 9 wickets for 280 runs in 50 overs. The hosts tried to recover from a poor start but were left out of victory.
Chasing a target of 303, Sri Lanka had a disappointing start. Kushal Mendis (7) on the score of 19. After this the team’s score was soon reduced to 63/4. In this, Kamindu Mendis hit a half-century and made a century partnership with captain Shanaka and took the team’s score to 181. After the dismissal of Kamindu, Shanaka continued to bat brilliantly. Despite this, he could not lead the team to victory.
The Sri Lankan captain hit seven fours and four sixes in his innings. He faced 94 balls. Chamika Karunaratne scored 34 runs. Earlier Zimbabwe got a good start. Regis Chakabwa (47) and Takudzwanashe Caetano (26) put on 59 runs for the first wicket. Sean Williams scored 48 runs. In such a situation, the visiting team was successful in making a big score.
