Lucknow. After the Supreme Court directed the Uttar Pradesh government to provide security to all the witnesses in the Lakhimpur violence case, the Special Research Team (SIT) has intensified the pace of investigation. The SIT has taken out an advertisement requesting eyewitnesses to give evidence. In the advertisement, the SIT has released the contact numbers of its members. Witnesses are urged to come forward to record their statements and contact them to provide digital evidence. The SIT says that the information of such people will be kept confidential and they will be given police protection.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to provide police protection to all the witnesses in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case as per the Witness Protection Scheme, 2018. Along with this, the court also directed to record the statements of other important witnesses under Section 164 of CrCP before the magistrate, saying that if the magistrate is not available to record the statement, the district judge will record the statement from the nearest magistrate. Apart from this, the court has asked the state government to file a separate status report regarding the two people killed in the violence, journalists Raman Kashyap and Shyam Sundar.
Let us inform that on October 3, four protesters were crushed by a vehicle in Lakhimpur Kheri. Apart from this, three other people were thrashed to death by the raging mob. A journalist was also killed in this violence. A total of eight people were killed in the incident. Two lawyers had written to the Chief Justice requesting him to intervene in the matter and conduct an inquiry. The court had taken cognizance of the letter and is hearing the matter.
Two arrested in the murder case of BJP workers: The SIT has also started action on the other side related to the violence. Two more accused have been arrested by the SIT in connection with the death of BJP workers in Tikunia. Gurvinder Singh and Vichitra Singh were arrested by the SIT and produced in the court of CJM. CJM Chintaram has sent both the accused to 14 days judicial custody. In the violence case, a case was registered against 20 unidentified persons including Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister of State, on charges of rioting, accidental death and murder on the Tahrir of farmer Jagjit Singh from one side. 13 people from this side have been arrested and sent to jail, while on the Tahrir of Lakhimpur councilor Sumit Jaiswal from the other side, a case was registered against 20-25 unknown people involved in the mob for rioting and murder. Gurvinder Singh’s police custody remand will be heard on Wednesday.
