The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned Zimbabwe spinner Roy Kaia from bowling in international cricket in view of illegal bowling action. Announcing this on Tuesday, the ICC said that Zimbabwe all-rounder Roy Kaia’s bowling action has been found to be illegal in an assessment by an independent panel, therefore he has been banned from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect. Roy may, however, bowl in domestic cricket with the consent of Zimbabwe Cricket.
The ICC stated that, “In accordance with Article 11.1 of the ICC Rules for Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspicious Illegal Bowling Action, Roy’s ban on bowling in international cricket shall be enforced by all national cricket federations within their jurisdiction.” shall also be taken into account and applied in domestic cricket tournaments in the U.S., however, in accordance with Article 11.5 of the ICC Rules and with the consent of Zimbabwe Cricket, Roy may bowl in domestic cricket tournaments played under their auspices.
It is noteworthy that during the Test match played against Bangladesh in Harare from July 7 to 11, 29-year-old off-spinner Roy was complained of suspicious bowling action. According to the ICC, an expert panel reviewed footage of Roy’s bowling action as it was not possible to conduct an assessment at an ICC accredited center due to various restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. After review, the panel came to the conclusion that Roy’s elbow bend more than 15 degrees while bowling is illegal. As per ICC rules, Roy Kaia can now apply for revaluation after improving his bowling action.
