London. India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is currently in England as the five-match Test series between India and England begins on August 4. R Ashwin has taken a big decision for the preparations for this test series. Ashwin is going to play county cricket. For this reason, R Ashwin was included in Surrey’s squad on Saturday for the County Championship match against Somerset, starting at The Oval on 11 July.
An official statement from the Surrey team said: “Ashwin will join the group for this match only. Sean Abbott was originally expected to be Surrey’s second overseas player in the match, along with Hashim Amla, but Gloucestershire Sean Abbott suffered a hamstring injury during a County Championship match with him and was ruled out of the match at the Kia Oval.” In such a situation, Ashwin will be a part of Surrey’s team.
He was replaced by New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson, who suffered a glute injury on the first day of Surrey’s match against Hampshire last week and will not play any further part on the field. Realizing the extent of Jamieson’s injury, Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart began the process of bringing Ashwin into the squad for this fixture, as the team looks to win the last two group matches and dream of Division One.
While the draw with Hampshire now makes it very difficult to finish in the top two, both the club and Ashwin have agreed to play in this match. Ashwin had remained in England after India’s World Test Championship final last month. He will join India’s Test team after this match ahead of their Test series with England. Ashwin will also get the benefit of this match because the fourth match between India and England will be played on this ground.
