New Delhi. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken a U-turn on the process of hosting its events. Till now cricket boards around the world used to submit bids to host these global tournaments through open bidding, but now this will not happen and the ICC Board will choose the host country for these tournaments. The decision to bid for the hosting was one of the more controversial results of the ICC meeting in October 2019.
After the ICC Board meeting held on Tuesday, the ICC said that under the next Future Tour Program (FTP) for the 2023 to 2031 cycle, the ICC has approved the process of selection of hosts for all its events and this selection process Will start this month. While no details were given as to how the process would work, the ICC’s decision to back down from inviting bids from all members would have pleased many opposing boards. The BCCI and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are also among the boards opposing the bidding process for the hosting.
In the next round, instead of bidding for all men’s, women’s and under-19 events, hosts will be selected. Men’s tournaments in the cycle marked the return of the Champions Trophy and included the ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup. The process of selecting hosts for these will begin this month, with hosts for all events to be confirmed by September. The process of hosting the women’s and under-19 events will begin in November.
Let us tell you that the ICC has set a target to organize at least one ICC event every year in the meeting held on June 1. Looking at the current year, there are two ICC tournaments to be held this year, in which one is the final of the World Test Championship, while the other is the T20 World Cup. This tournament is to be organized in India.
