Haldwani: Usually a leopard in the forest travels up to 40 km daily in search of food. But a leopard in Kumaon has made a record of walking in a day. He covered a distance of 216 km in the forest of the mountainous region. While walking, he reached the place from which he was captured. The forest department also monitored every movement of it through radio caller. It is often said about the leopard that he wanders around the river in search of prey. But it does not get into the water. But in Haridwar, a leopard crossed the Ganges river several times.
Leopard population of Uttarakhand has become synonymous with terror in the region. For detailed research on the change in behavior, since September last year, the department has installed a radio collar on four leopards. Leopard of Haridwar, Tehri and Bageshwar are included in this. Apart from this, two tigers shifted from Corbett to Rajaji Park and three elephants in the plains area are also being monitored by radio callers. The forest department has a complete record of every movement of these wildlife-mounted radio callers. It is claimed that none of them have done any damage to the population area so far.
According to officials, in November, a leopard was brought from Bageshwar to the rescue center at Ranibagh and radio-trained. After which he was released into a forest 50 km from the center. But on 13 January, this leopard traveled 216 km continuously traveling in one day. Which in itself is surprising. Because, even during the hunt, the distance traveled by the leopard was five times more. At the same time, the radio collar tiger traveled a maximum of 42 km and the elephant traveled a forest of 22 km.
Homecoming trend
Radio collar was placed on the leopard and tiger by the forest department. One thing turned out to be normal in them. Even once but everyone also made a homecoming. That is, the place from which he was resuscitated to install the radio collar. He had roamed the forest again. After moving around for some time, they moved forward again.
20 sq km radius of Tiger 40 and Leopard
According to wildlife experts, 40 sq km i.e. 160 km of tiger forest is considered to have tertiary jurisdiction. Whereas for leopard it is 20 sq km (80) km. The leopard tries its best not to face the tiger. As soon as he understands the danger, he turns to the side.
Continuous monitoring
Chief wildlife advocate JS Suhag said that on January 13, Guldar had covered the maximum distance so far. Elephants, tigers and leopards with radio collar are constantly being monitored. Forest has a full team of expert staff. It will take time to reach a conclusion about the change in behavior.
