Mount Maunganui | New Zealand ended Saturday with 222 runs at the loss of three wickets on the first day of the first Test match being played against Pakistan at the Bay Oval ground here.
Captain Kane Williamson is close to a century. He is playing 94 runs. Henry Nicholls is unbeaten with 42 runs with him.
Pakistan won the toss and chose bowling. He also got a good start. The opening pair of Tom Latham (4) and Tom Blundle (5) were sent to the pavilion by Shaheen Shah Afridi.
But after this Pakistani bowlers got upset. Williamson stepped up and was supported by veteran Ross Taylor. Both shared a 120-run partnership for the third wicket. Of this, 70 runs were from Taylor. His innings also ended with Afridi scoring a total of 133.
Taylor faced 151 balls in his innings and hit a six in addition to 10 fours.
Williamson then joined Nicholas. Together, the two did not allow Pakistan to take a fourth wicket till the stumps.
So far, 89 runs have been shared between the two. Nicholas has faced 100 balls in his innings and has hit four boundaries.
