New York | After being elected as the 46th President of the United States, Joseph Robinette Biden stated that “this fight for the soul of America has strengthened democracy.” Kamla Harris, the first woman and Indian American to be elected as Vice-President along with Biden, has made history in these elections.
The Electoral College formally voted on Monday after the November 3 presidential election, although President Donald Trump is still questioning the validity of the election. Voting began at different times in states’ legislature buildings across the country. Officials cast their ballots at 10 am in Washington, while in California at 5 pm. Soon after, Biden and Harris crossed the 270 mark for the win. However, the voting continued even after that, which ended after the ballot was cast in Hawaii at 7 pm.
America’s political system consists of voting by citizens to elect the president, as well as indirectly voting 538 members of the Electoral College distributed in the states. Biden and Harris received 306 electoral votes in these elections, while President Donald Trump received only 232 votes.
Electoral college voting was cleared after the US Supreme Court rejected appeals by Republicans against elections in some states. However, Trump and his supporters have not retreated yet. He has threatened to file more such cases. Trump has been consistently accused of committing widespread fraud in elections without proof.
After the voting was complete, Biden said, “We voted. We have confidence in our institutions. The integrity of our elections is intact. So now is the time to unite to fix everything to change things.”
After the vote, there will now be a meeting of the newly elected Congress on 6 January to formally count the elected votes and certify the election.
