Bareilly . Bareilly police in UP made the first arrest three days after registering the first case under the new anti-conversion law. A few hours after bringing an ordinance against ‘forced’ conversion, Owaish Ahmed (22) was booked on Sunday.
Ahmed has been booked under the Uttar Pradesh Laws Against Religion Transformation Prohibition Ordinance-2020 for allegedly ‘threatening to abduct’ a 20-year-old married woman in Devarnia area of Bareilly district and pressurizing him to change his religion.
The accused was hidden for a long time. He said that ‘he feared he would be shot in the encounter.’
Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Sansar Singh said, “He may have this perception, but the police never intended to do so as he is not a history sheeter.”
He added, “We were just looking for him and many teams were also stationed in neighboring districts for this. He was produced before a magistrate on Wednesday, who remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days. We Now the complainant will record the statements of witnesses and complete the investigation in this case. ”
Ahmed and the woman were school friends. When the girl went missing last year, her family still filed a case against Ahmed. It is later revealed that she ran away from the house at his behest. He later said that they wanted to be together.
The woman was then recovered from Bhopal. He was on his way to Mumbai.
The complainant alleged that the woman was married to another man a few months later, but Ahmed started following the woman.
The woman’s father alleged in his complaint that Ahmed had been threatening and threatening her for the last three years.
Ahmed has been booked under Section 504 and 506 of the IPC and Section 3/5 of the Ordinance.
Ahmed told reporters, “I have been arrested under the Love Jihad Act. I have no relationship with the woman. She got married a year ago. I am innocent.”
