Bhopal. Two leaders have entered the house of Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh. Former Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, called ‘Raja’ and Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is called ‘Maharaj’, have reached Parliament through Rajya Sabha after the defeat in Lok Sabha elections 2019. Both these leaders were earlier going to the Rajya Sabha from the Congress, but due to lack of top position in the order of priority and other reasons, Scindia left the party and on Friday, both leaders won the Rajya Sabha elections. At one time, the leaders of these two royal families used to be close to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, but now the opposing political parties will sit in the Rajya Sabha from the BJP-Congress.
Jyotiraditya Scindia, who won the Rajya Sabha elections, comes from the Gwalior royal family, whose family has been in active politics from grandmother Vijayaraje Scindia to father Madhavrao Scindia, Bua Vasundhara Raje and Yashodhara Raje. Jyotiraditya Scindia, who came into politics after the death of his father Madhavrao Scindia, won the Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket four times and remained a Union Minister.
Scindia was not happy with the Congress leadership in the state
Scindia lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 and struggled in politics for nearly nine months. If the situation of the three seats of Madhya Pradesh became vacant in the Rajya Sabha adamant on the Scindia preference, then due to the then Congress government in the state, the Congress was likely to get two seats, but there was a possibility of a fierce contest in the second seat, hence Scindia wanted the first number in preference, on which he was saddened by the evasive attitude of the party leaders. He was not happy with the party leadership in the state even before.
BJP took advantage of the situation
The BJP took advantage of this situation and toppled Scindia with the Congress government. In this, Scindia was assured to send Rajya Sabha. With Scindia, the mathematics of Rajya Sabha elections changed in the state and the loss of one seat to BJP could not be done. On 19 June, ‘Maharaj’ Scindia finally reached the Rajya Sabha from the BJP.
The ‘Raja’, the king who won after the defeat, i.e. Digvijay Singh, comes from the royal family of Raghaugarh in Guna district of Madhya Pradesh. Digvijay’s father Balabhadra was also politically active in the local body. His younger brother Lakshman Singh i.e. ‘Chota Raja’ and son Jayawardhan Singh ‘Baba’ are also in politics. Digvijay persisted even after a bitter defeat to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur from Bhopal and continued to help him by reaching out to the people in the parliamentary constituency.
Digvijay Singh tried to make the Rajya Sabha election interesting.
As a Rajya Sabha member, he remained active till April 9, 2020, but to keep himself active in politics, he took the help of former Chief Minister Kamal Nath to retain his seat in the Rajya Sabha seat and reached the high command in Delhi. After the reserved class’s Baraiya was fielded, after Scindia left the Congress, Digvijay Singh tried to make the Rajya Sabha election interesting by throwing Phool Singh Baraiya’s card for the reserved class.
A Congress government under the then circumstances of March could have tried to vote for Baraiya, but after the government fell, Baraiya’s victory became difficult. Meanwhile, to ensure Digvijay’s victory, a strategy of 54 instead of 52 votes was made and he got not only 54 but 57 votes. With this, Raja won the second innings in the Rajya Sabha on 19 June.
