New Delhi. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat. During this, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi and Robert Vadra were also present. Let us tell you, BJP has made Dinesh Pratap Singh its candidate from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat. Dinesh Pratap has also filed his nomination on Friday.
Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat has been the traditional seat of the Gandhi family. Firoz Gandhi first contested and won the elections in 1952 (and then in 1958 also). After the death of Feroze Gandhi, Indira Gandhi started her political innings from here in 1967. In 2004, Indira Gandhi’s daughter-in-law Sonia Gandhi contested the elections and was elected MP five times. Now Sonia Gandhi’s son Rahul Gandhi is going to take over this legacy. The last time BJP won here was in 1998, when Ashok Singh was made the candidate.
Local BJP leader Ashok Singh defeated the Congress candidate in two consecutive elections in 1996 and 1998. In 1999, Gandhi family associate Satish Sharma brought Congress back here. In 2004, Sonia Gandhi took command of Congress from this seat and since then continued the winning streak from here till 2019. However, this time he decided not to contest the elections and chose the path of Rajya Sabha. Now the party has declared Rahul Gandhi as its candidate from Rae Bareli.
