Agra. After some respite in the corona pandemic and a sharp drop in numbers, the district administration is all set to welcome domestic tourists to the historical monuments in Agra.
In view of the alarming increase in the number of corona patients, the Taj and other monuments were closed for tourists 2 months ago. The Archaeological Survey of India has announced the reopening of the monuments from June 16 in a circular.
People associated with the tourism industry in Agra have welcomed this decision and asked for the resumption of international flights. Hoteliers have also demanded relaxation and a special package to help the industry come out of the crisis. Senior hotelier Surendra Sharma said, “At least some relief in taxes and electricity bills can be considered.”
Hotels in Agra have either been closed or partially opened since March 2020. The COVID 19 pandemic has almost paralyzed the hospitality and travel industry. Now they are demanding special schemes and concessions to ease the suffering caused by the continued detention.
Hoteliers feel that though the reopening of monuments will help to some extent, there may not be any positive turn until international flights resume.
The 17th-century monument of love, the Taj Mahal, attracted more than 7 million tourists annually before the pandemic.
The district administration indicated that proper precautions would be required to be taken before allowing entry to the visitors of the monuments. Full care will be taken that there is no crowd. Initially tickets will be issued online.
There has been a welcome drop in the daily number of COVID 19 patients since the last one week. Only six cases were reported in the last 24 hours.
