new Delhi. MGNREGA has become a major support for daily wage laborers in villages during the crisis of Corona epidemic. Central government figures show that under the MNREGA in July, people got 114 percent more work than last year. This figure of work being received by the people in the villages under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has been increasing since May. Under this scheme of employment operated under the Union Ministry of Rural Development, people got 73 per cent more work in the last month in May as compared to last year, 92 per cent more in June and 114 per cent more in July.
In fact, after the migration of migrant laborers from the metros in the Corona period, the government also laid special emphasis on MNREGA to provide a means of livelihood for them in the villages and earlier increased the wage rate under this scheme from Rs 182 to 202. Rupees daily and later also increased its budget by Rs 40,000 crore.
The budgetary allocation of MNREGA in the current financial year 2020-21 was Rs 61,500 crore and an additional provision of Rs 40,000 crore for MNREGA was made in the economic package of Rs 20 lakh crore announced by the government under the Self-Reliant India Campaign in the Corona era.
According to the data received from the Ministry, under MGNREGA, in the current month of July, an average of 2.26 crore people got work in the country, which is 114 percent more than the previous year, while an average of 1.05 crore people got daily work in the same month.
Earlier in June, on an average 3.35 crore people got daily work, which is 92 percent more than the 1.74 crore in June last year. At the same time, in May this year, an average of 2.51 crore people got daily work under MGNREGA, which is 73% higher than the figure of 1.45 crore in June last year.
According to the data, under the MNREGA, 1.86 lakh gram panchayats have got work till 30 July. According to information received from the Union Rural Development Ministry, 9.24 crore people have got employment opportunities under MNREGA till 30 July and a total amount of Rs 50,780 crore has been released under this scheme till 29 July.
According to the data of the Ministry, 157.89 crore man-days have been created till July 30 in the current financial year, whereas 265.35 person days were generated during the last financial year 2019-20.
Under the MGNREGA, people willing to work in rural areas are guaranteed 100 days of employment a year.
The name of the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREGA) scheme started in 2006 during the rule of the Congress was changed to Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) in 2009.
