new Delhi. With the trend towards Indian goods and manufacturers increasing, the government is seriously considering mandating the name of the source country for products sold on e-commerce platforms. The Department of Industry and Internal Trade Promotion (DPIIT) on Wednesday held a meeting with their representatives, including representatives from Amazon and Flipkart, to find out the views of e-commerce platforms on the issue.
Guriprasad Mohapatra, secretary of DPIIT, told IANS that the matter is under consideration of the ministry, as it is compatible with the Make in India vision and gives the consumer more options to know where the production has come from.
He said that as of now no advisory or instructions have been issued and the matter has been discussed only with the representatives and a decision will be taken only after due deliberations.
People familiar with the matter further stated that e-portals are not genuine sellers in most cases, and vendors sell products that have a large number. During Wednesday’s meeting it was discussed how the proposed idea could be implemented with such a large number of vendors.
This development matters because the government is promoting Indian goods more and has called for a self-reliant India. Demand to give importance to Indian products has begun to pick up amidst ongoing tension along the border with China.
This meeting took place at a time when a few days ago the Central Government made it mandatory for sellers to enter the name of the country of origin at the time of registration of all new products on the government e-marketplace.
