The perfume city has an old relationship with China. During the reign of King Harshavardhana, Chinese traveler Hanensang came to India and stayed in Kannauj for many months. He praised the perfume manufacture here. When there were trade relations with China, small vials for perfume started being imported from there. According to traders, till now 70 percent of designers and fancy vials used to come from China. Import stopped in lockdown. Due to tension on the border after the unlock, traders did not even place new orders. The city’s iconic perfume business Muste Hassan says that it will now promote domestic products and make vials in factories in Kannauj and Mumbai. Perfume businessman Sonu Pandey says that the boycott of Chinese products will have to depend on the domestic product.

According to Muste Hassan, the Jerichan and velvet vials made in Kannauj can outperform the Chinese vials. It is handmade and reusable, while vials from China can only be used once.
