The government gives ₹6,000 per year as minimum income support
At the same time, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi is an initiative of the Government of India that gives up to ₹6,000 per year to farmers as minimum income support. The initiative was announced by Piyush Goyal on 1 February 2019 during the Interim Union Budget 2019 of India. The scheme costs ₹75,000 crores per year and came into effect in December 2018. The scheme was first conceived and implemented by the Telangana government as the Raithu Bandhu scheme, where a fixed amount is given directly to eligible farmers.
The government launched the scheme for farmers on the suggestion of economists
The scheme has received praise from various organizations, including the World Bank, for its successful implementation. Many economists suggest that this type of investment support is better than agricultural loan waivers. With the positive results of this scheme, the Indian government wanted to implement it as a nationwide project and it was announced by Piyush Goyal during the 2019 Interim Union Budget of India on 1 February 2019. On 24 February 2019, Narendra Modi launched this scheme by transferring the first installment of ₹2,000 to more than one crore farmers in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. So far, 16 installments have been received by farmers under this scheme.
