Lucknow. Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, PGI’s Indo Surgery OT caught fire with a loud bang due to a short circuit in the monitor kept there. When the fire broke out in the OT, a 28-year-old woman and a 30-day-old baby girl were undergoing surgery in the adjacent OT. As soon as the explosion occurred, the doctors and paramedical staff performing the operation ran out, leaving the woman on the operation table. The fire filled other nearby OTs and departments with smoke. Amidst the panic and chaos, attendants also started running outside carrying the admitted patients along with their beds. Meanwhile, smoke quickly filled the entire floor, causing patients to suffocate.
Fire brigade personnel somehow pulled out the woman and the girl from the OT, but by then both of them had died. The deceased woman was a resident of Pilibhit and the newborn was a resident of Ghazipur. The fire could be controlled in two hours with the help of seven vehicles.
At the same time, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took information about the PGI incident and directed to take strict action against the culprits. Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak has ordered an investigation into the incident. The role of PGI administration in the entire matter is under question. The building in which the fire broke out did not even have a fire NOC. Not only this, after the fire, instead of focusing on rescue and relief work, the administration was busy preventing the media from going inside.
Director Prof. RK Dhiman says that the fire broke out due to spark in the monitor kept in OT. Investigation has been ordered. Further action will be taken based on the report. According to FSO Mamchand, by the time the woman was taken out after the fire, she was dead. Next to this, in the CVTS OT, a newborn baby was undergoing heart surgery and he also suffocated due to the smoke. The post-operation ward next to the OT was also filled with smoke due to which more than 30 patients admitted after the operation started having difficulty in breathing.
With the help of attendants, they were taken to safe places. At the time of the incident, a child was undergoing surgery in robotic surgery. There will be alternative arrangements for OT. The entire OT was ruined due to the fire. In such a situation, alternative OT will be arranged for the surgery. The hospital administration says that arrangements are being made to ensure that endo surgery and CVTS (heart) surgery is not delayed for any serious patient. There are many OTs in PGI where the remaining operations will be done.
This happens in the OT complex
The OT complex mainly consists of OT for CVTS, Endo Surgery and Robotic Surgery. Apart from this, there is a post of ward adjacent to it. CVTS is ICU ward. The OT of Gastro and Urology has been shifted to another place.
