Lucknow. The post of Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council has been snatched from the Samajwadi Party. Due to less than 10 percent of the total members of the Legislative Council being members of the Samajwadi Party, Chairman Kunwar Manvendra Singh on Thursday abolished the recognition of Leader of Opposition Lal Bihari Yadav. Now he is the leader of Samajwadi Party.
The main opposition party, the Samajwadi Party, now has nine members in the 100-member Legislative Council. The leader of that party is given the post of Leader of the Opposition only if he has more than 10 percent of the members. On July 6, the term of 12 members of the Legislative Council ended. These include six members of SP, three from BSP, two from BJP and one from Congress. At the same time, in the elections held in the last days for 13 seats of MLC, BJP’s nine and four SP candidates won unopposed.
In such a situation, BJP now has 73 members in the Legislative Council, while SP has nine and BSP has only one member. Therefore, on Thursday, the Chairman removed Lal Bihari Yadav of Samajwadi Party from the post of Leader of Opposition. Principal Secretary of Legislative Council Dr. Rajesh Singh has issued its notification on Thursday. Lal Bihari was made the Leader of the Opposition on 27 May this year.
Lal Bihari remained Leader of Opposition for only 41 days: Lal Bihari Yadav of Samajwadi Party got the shortest time on the post of Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council. He has got a tenure of only 41 days. Lal Bihari Yadav, who became Leader of Opposition on May 27, was removed on Thursday. Earlier, the Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Sanjay Lather, got a tenure of 60 days. The tenure of Sanjay Lather, who became Leader of Opposition on March 28 this year, ended on May 26.
