Kabul: At least 56 Taliban militants have been killed and 10 others injured in the northern region of Afghanistan. While 23 have been arrested. Security forces continued to fight to prevent the group from advancing. The army gave this information on Saturday. The army’s 209th Shaheen Corps said in a statement that 45 militants were killed and 10 others wounded in attacks by security forces backed by the Afghan Air Force on the outskirts of the city of Shibarghan, the capital of Javazan province.
According to the report of Xinhua news agency, among those killed was a prominent divisional commander of the terrorists, Obaidullah.
In neighboring Sari Pul province, 11 Taliban militants were killed and 23 others captured, as Afghan troops backed by local public insurgency forces launched a clean-up operation in villages in the remote Balkhab district, according to the statement.
The security forces also reopened the provincial highway Sari Pul-Jawajjan Highway No. 1 connecting the two provinces after a month-long shutdown, the statement said.
The northern Afghan province has been witness to heavy fighting in recent weeks as Taliban militants have captured several suburban districts since the withdrawal of US-led forces on May 1.
