Victoria (Seychelles). Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar assured Seychelles Indian-origin President Wavell Ramakalavan that his country was among India’s special priority in the fight against the Kovid-19 epidemic. The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations, including close security cooperation. Jaishankar arrived here on Friday, after Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, in order to travel to three countries. Jaishankar tweeted that during his meeting with President Ramkalavan, he handed over the personal message of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to him.
The visit of the Foreign Minister has special significance because India is developing infrastructure in this country to increase its influence in the strategically important core areas of the Indian Ocean. China is also trying to increase its military presence in the region. Jaishankar also met his counterpart Silvestre Radegonde and thanked him for the warm welcome. Indian-born Wavell Ramakalavan won the presidential election on October 25 this year. This is the first victory of an opposition candidate in this country after independence. Born in Mahe, the main island of the Seychelles, Ramkalavan’s grandfather was from the Indian state of Bihar.
