new Delhi. Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan has refused to apologize to the Supreme Court for his two tweets for which he has been convicted of contempt of court. Bhushan said that his tweets are a symbol of his faith, a belief he still holds. In a supplementary statement in the Supreme Court, Bhushan said, “My tweets reflect my faith.” I still have this belief. Consistent with my obligations as a citizen and a loyal officer of this Court. Therefore, an apology for the expression of these beliefs, conditional or unconditional, would be against my conscience and this institution, which I place very high.
The Supreme Court gave Bhushan till 24 August to apologize. Attorney General K.K. Venugopal had appealed to the Supreme Court that it is right to convict Bhushan but not appropriate to punish.
Justice Arun Mishra, B.C. R. A division bench of Gavai and Krishna Murari said, the appeal filed against the registrar’s order is dismissed. Pleas were heard in the case. The verdict on the sentence is safe. After this, the Supreme Court bench told Attorney General that the matter is getting worse with Bhushan’s statement. The bench told AG Venugopal, “Is the matter getting worse or is it their defense, you decide.”
