Nainital: Professor of Himalayan history, Kumaon University Professor of Geography, Department Raghuveer Chand is no more. Last night, when his health deteriorated, the family took him to Ramje Hospital near the house. He was suffering from cancer. He is survived by his wife Meera, married daughter Aditi and Suditi. He was undergoing treatment for a long time. He returned from Delhi two days ago. The university’s professor, employees have mourned his death.
Originally a resident of Seri village in Pithoragarh district, Chand did high school from Devalathal while Inter GIC from Pithoragarh. He studied for 20 km every day on foot. He did his MA in Geography from PG College Pithoragarh and was a Gold Medalist. In 1978, he was appointed to Kumaon University. Prof. Chand did PhD in Brokpas Watershed in Bhutan. He was also a professor there. Participated in the Ascot Arakot expedition organized by Pahar Sanstha with renowned historian Prof. Shekhar Pathak.
He has given PhD to many students in Himalayan research including Kailas Mansarovar region. He was appointed the first professor of his field in Pithoragarh. Also worked with the famous geologist Prof. Kharak Singh Valdia. Pahar Sanstha has also published a book on his study. Vice Chancellor Prof. NK Joshi, Prof. Bhagwan Singh Bisht, Pre-DSB, Prof. Shekhar Pathak, Prof. Girdhar Negi, Prof. PC Tiwari, Prof. Satpal Singh Bisht, Prof. Anil Joshi, Dr. Jyoti Joshi, Prof. LM Joshi, Prof. Lalit Tiwari, on his death Prof. Jeet Ram, Prof. Savitri Jantwal, Prof. Neeta Bora Sharma, Prof. Chandrakala Rawat, Prof. HCS Bisht, among others, have expressed condolences and described the loss to the university as irreparable.
