new Delhi. Indian Railways will run on ‘Made in India’ parts. The Railways plan to do away with imported equipment and promote the domestic industry. Vinod Kumar Yadav, chairman of the Indian Railway Board, has bluntly stated that “he plans to reduce the need for imported equipment in railways in the coming days”. Yadav stressed that Indian Railways are becoming more and more capable. Indian Railways has exported locos and rail coaches manufactured here. In response to a question regarding the termination of a contract of a Chinese company in the railway during video conferencing, Yadav said that most of the contracts in the railway are given only to domestic companies, which will be continued.
Asked whether Chinese companies would be banned from participating in railway infrastructure projects, Yadav said, “Only domestic companies are allowed to participate in railway projects.”
The board chairman said that in the last two-three years, the Railways has taken several measures to reduce the import of equipment from abroad. We have adopted the policy of Make in India. For example, in the signal system, railways have made it mandatory to have at least 70 per cent equipment with Make in India. It is our endeavor that the railway will become an exporter in the coming days.
Railways on Thursday canceled the contract of a Chinese company working in the railway signaling sector on the basis of its poor performance. The company received a contract of Rs 471 crore for work in 473 km between Kanpur to Mughalsarai. The company has been able to operate only 20 percent in four years. In the coming days, it is unlikely that Chinese companies will participate in any railway project.
